Searching for Jesus Christ

Jesus Appearing to Mary Magdalene

Jesus Appearing to Mary Magdalene

My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. (Psalm 84:2)

Ringing in the New Year, 2013 with More of You Jesus!

Mary Magdalene knew all she wanted to do was to be with the Lord Jesus.  She knew she loved Him dearly and she would follow Him wherever He taught.

She knew because she stood next to Him, watched and saw for herself what a divine holy being Jesus was to her sight.  After all, He delivered her from seven demons:

  • Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.  (Mark 16:9)
  • … and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities—Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, (Luke 8:2)

Why would Jesus appear to Mary Magdalene first above all others who had also followed Him tirelessly in His journeys?

I believe that Mary Magdalene placed Jesus first in her heart, in her time, in her emotions, in her finances without complaint or doubt, to help support Jesus’ ministry to spread the good news of the gospel.  She invested her finances to buy spices to anoint Jesus for His burial.

  • Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him.

I believe she had such deep emotions of love and affection coupled with gratitude for His abilities to heal.  I believe He opened a window of hope into Heaven where she knew her eternal destiny laid.

When Jesus was crucified, Mary Magdalene stood by the cross and grieved.

It was Mary Magdalene who went to the now empty tomb early while it was still dark:

  • Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.  (John 20:1)

Even after she sees that the tomb is empty she is still hanging around weeping longing to know where His body has been taken; she doesn’t give up because He is still very much in her heart and she needs closure – to see that He is properly buried:

  • 11 But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?
  • She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

I believe her wholly devoted committed attitude to Jesus, plus she was still at the tomb searching for Jesus Christ and weeping for His body that triggered the Lord’s appearance, His compassion and mercy for Mary Magdalene.  I believe He wanted to reassure Her that He is well, alive and definitely risen as He promised He would do, making His promises of Heaven and eternity genuine:

  • 14 Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”
  • She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
  • 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
  • She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
  • 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’”

We’re entering into a New Year 2013 commit to have a wholly devoted attitude to Jesus Christ and His message of the gospel.

We need more of Him.  We need more of His goodness, His love, His life, His protection, His provisions and His strength to endure in this world.

Where Are You?

Bible

Bible

Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9)

As the creator of the heavens and of the earth, God is sovereign ruler over all  His creation–the original bringing into existence of the universe by God.

When God asked Adam, “Where are you?”  God knew precisely where Adam was.  God knows everything, nothing is hidden from Him (adjective: He is present everywhere at the same time: the omnipresent God).  God was asking Adam to force Adam to acknowledge his situation, his relationship with God, his now fallen condition–he had just sinned from disobedience affecting everything about him, his family, and for all generations to come–his today and all his tomorrows.

Examining three facets  in our relationship to the Lord, Where You Are, Where You Are Going, and finally reaching Here I Am:

1.  Where You Are:

  • And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward… (Genesis 13:14)

Look around you.  Take stock of your current situation with the Lord.  Are you placing enough value into what He is saying?  Are you following Him with all your strength, all of your might? Do you have a set time and place to worship Him daily? Are you reading your bible daily to get to know His way, His will for your life?

2.  Where are you going?

  • And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing… (Genesis 16:8)
  • To whom do you belong, and where are you going?  (Genesis 32:17)

Like Hagar, are your circumstances in such a way that you are running from God by not following His lead?  Are you committed to God that you have the full understanding of what God is doing in your life to further you deeper into a fruitful relationship with Him? Do you have purpose to change your ways to His ways?

Are you like Martha?  “But Martha was distracted with much serving,” (Luke 10:40) so much so that the Lord states:

Diego Velázquez - Christ in the House of Marth...

Diego Velázquez – Christ in the House of Martha and Mary (1618) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

“Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.” (Luke 10:41)

Or have you chosen Jesus, like Mary who “has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42)

3.   Here I Am:

  • Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” (Genesis 22:22)

Are you so committed with passion for the Lord that you have chosen wisely and can say with all humility and honesty, “Lord, Here I Am,” when He calls you?

Are you embedded into a rich, trustful,  relationship with the Lord that when things don’t go the way you intended, you dwell in the Lord to help you get through the situation and accept “that which I cannot change?”

Can you praise and worship freely, willingly to the Lord for all that He has done?  Where are you?

  • [ Joy in the Fellowship of God ] A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. (Psalm 63:1)

Supernatural Power In The Name of Jesus

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe. (Proverbs 18:10)

Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ

So what makes the name of  the Lord Jesus so powerful that even the demons (evil spirit, devil or fiend)  run at the sound of it?

In the Christian Holy Bible, in the Book of Matthew 1:21, an angel declares to Joseph, Virgin Mary’s future husband, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

The angel was prophesying the purpose of the birth of the Lord Jesus who will save His people from their sins–a Savior!

The Lord Jesus went about the countryside preaching the gospel and healing those with infirmities using His supernatural (supernatural mid 15c., “above nature, transcending nature, belonging to a higher realm,”) abilities:

All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the spirits. (Proverbs 16:2)

  • …and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities (Luke 5:15)
  • And He was preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and casting out demons. (Mark 1:39)

Listed below are several examples of individuals being delivered or released from evil spirits by the Lord Jesus Christ and by the seventy who were followers of the Lord Jesus invoking the name of “Jesus.”

Mary Magdalene:

  • Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. (Mark 16:9)
  • and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities—Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons (Luke 8:2)

The demon-possessed man:

  • 26 Then they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.
  • Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demonshad entered him.
    Demoniac

    Demoniac

    (Luke 8:30)

Can you imagine a legion?  A legion in the Roman infantry of men is from 3,000 to 6,000!

  • 31 And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss. 32 Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them. 33 Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned. (Luke 8:31-33)

The Seventy:

  • Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” (Luke 10:17)

The Mute:

  • And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute spoke; and the multitudes marveled. (Luke 11:14)

Of course, Jesus was empowered by the Holy Spirit to create His miracles of deliverance.  He promised His followers, the baptism of the Holy Spirit:

  • And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Call on the name of the Lord Jesus; establish a relationship, get baptized in the Holy Spirit so you, too, can be empowered to cast out demons in His name:

  • 21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved. (Acts 2:21)

Mary’s Song

Mary’s Song

By

Alberta Fisher

The passage of scripture found in Luke 1:39-45  NAS tells us that after the birth of Jesus is foretold to Mary Writing the MagnificatMary, she visits Elizabeth’s home for three months.  Both women were “with child.” What do you think they talked about?  They probably visited about the same things as any two ladies that are pregnant at the same time.

Mary did not have great status in life; just a young humble virgin girl engaged to Joseph, a carpenter.  I am sure Mary was experiencing a lot of excitement and joy after finding out from the angel Gabriel that she was to give birth to the Son of God by the Holy Spirit. It was during this inner reflective time that the scripture records one of the greatest songs of all time – “Mary’s Song”, also referred to as the “Magnificat”. As you can see from the scriptures, this song is full of praises to God.

Mary’s Song can be in the following passage from Luke 1:46-55 NAS.

  •  46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
  •  47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
  •  48 For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid: For behold, from henceforth all generations   shall call me blessed.
  •  49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name.
  •  50 And his mercy is unto generations and generations On them that fear him.
  •  51 He hath showed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.
  •  52 He hath put down princes from their thrones, And hath exalted them of low degree.
  •  53 The hungry he hath filled with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away.
  •  54 He hath given help to Israel his servant, That he might remember mercy
  •  55 (As he spake unto our fathers) Toward Abraham and his seed for ever.

In Verses 46-49 she tells of God’s concern for her and in verses 50-55, God’s concern and care for all generations to follow. Verse 45 gives us part of Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary, “And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.” As noted by Mary’s use of the past tense in the Magnificat, she believed it had indeed happened. This exemplifies her great faith.

We, too, can be used of God by exhibiting great faith and a willingness to put our faith into action. As you continue on in your walk with God, let faith lead the way. . . . for unto us is born a child!

Have a blessed and merry Christmas!
