A Living Sanctuary

“Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them.” (Exodus 25:8)

A sanctuary is also a temple–dedicated to the service of and a house of worship of a deity or deities and in this case worshiping the holy God in Heaven:

1. in Judaism:

  • a.  the Israelite temple at Jerusalem, especially the holy of holies
  • b. the tabernacle in which the Ark of the Covenant was enshrined during the wanderings of the Israelites
2. an especially holy place in a physical temple or church building.
3. the part of a church around the altar; the chancel.
4. a church or other sacred place where fugitives were formerly entitled to immunity from arrest.
The sanctuary is identified with sacredness/holy:
Sacred/holy (sin free):
Associated with God or with a deity, sacred.  Endowed with or invested in extreme purity or sublimity; devout, godly, virtuous
1. exclusively devoted to a deity or to some religious ceremony or use; holy; consecrated
2. worthy of or regarded with reverence, awe, or respect
3. protected by superstition or piety from irreligious actions
4. connected with or intended for religious use: sacred music
5. dedicated to; in honor of
from Latin sacrāre  to set apart as holy, from sacer  holy
God sets the standards for living a holy, sacred life in His sanctuary:
  • “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” (Exodus 3:5)
  • I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground.” (Leviticus 11:44)
  • “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.’ ” (Acts 7:33)
However, man, because of  his spiritual blindness and unbridled sin, breaks the relationship with God, by worshiping other gods: ie, practicing  abortion of  innocent children He created, the prophets becoming unprincipled, and marrying women who worship other gods:
  • On the very day they sacrificed their children to their idols, they entered my sanctuary and desecrated it. That is what they did in my house (Ezekiel 23:29)
  • Her prophets are unprincipled; they are treacherous people. Her priests profane the sanctuary and do violence to the law. (Zephaniah 3:4)
  • Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the LORD loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god.  (Malachi 2:11)
  • They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed. Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name. (Amos 2:7)

The Lord God is not deaf; He hears and knows all that is taking place with man:

  • 19 “The LORD looked down from His sanctuary on high  from heaven He viewed the earth 20 to hear the groans of the prisoners  and release those condemned to death.” 21 So the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion and His praise in Jerusalem 22 when the people and the kingdoms assemble to worship the LORD.  (Psalm 102:19-21)
As the sanctuary, the temple of the Lord was the physical church (the tent building) housing the Ark of the Covenant the holy of holies,  today, Jesus Christ is our spiritual sanctuary–our holy of holies:
  • For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence.  (Hebrews 9:24)
Lastly,  there is properly “no sanctuary” for God and the Lamb “are the sanctuary” (“temple”), hallowed by His Divine Presence:
  •  22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. (Revelation 21:22)
Because the word of the Lord is truth, believe He did die for you at the cross to set you free from your sins; make Him your living sanctuary.
Worship the Lord, Jesus Christ.  Accept Him into your heart. Sanctify, dedicate yourself to the Lord Jesus. Decree and declare to yourself and to others that Jesus Christ died and rose again on that 3rd fateful day, to rule and reign forever in righteousness.

  1. Mary,

Great article. The video, “Lord, Prepare Me” really “blessed my socks off”!. My desire is that God will prepare me to be a sanctuary of worship to Him. He truly is worthy of my praise.

    • Hi Alberta!

Blessed that this article touched you. I hadn’t worked on an article all week until I heard this song on tv and I remembered it from long ago. It inspired me that I was able to work on it and complete it in a few hours yesterday!

Now I’m singing this song spiritually as it has also touched me.

  2. Mary I am late in getting to read this really great article. I too, like Alberta found the video and music so very touching! I love when God can touch us deeply thru music and good people like you, my friend. Wow, how will your next article touch me?
I so love God’s word and love seeing how you and others are used by God to get it put in such a sweet way, that I can understand it more deeply. Thank you and blessings!
    Yours in Christ Always,
