A Christmas Winter Solstice

  • Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; (Genesis 1:14)
  • He made the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, And the chambers of the south; (Job 9:9)
  • “Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, Or loose the belt of Orion? ” (Job 38:31)
  • He made the Pleiades and Orion; He turns the shadow of death into morning And makes the day dark as night; He calls for the waters of the sea And pours them out on the face of the earth; The LORD is His name. (Amos 5:8)

My previous article discussed the Star of Bethlehem announcing the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, the much-anticipated Messiah,  Savior of the World.

Engrossed with the spectacular event that the Magi had seen, the event left us to ponder, wonder, and be mystified, wistful that we didn’t experience the event for ourselves, so much so that I almost overlooked another spectacular event taking place right under my eyes of today–Winter Solstice, which takes place during the Christmas holidays or this year, precisely,  December 21, 2012.

“The winter solstice is the solstice that occurs in winter. It is the time at which the Sun is appearing at noon at its lowest altitude above the horizon. In the Northern Hemisphere this is the Southern solstice, the time at which the Sun is at its southernmost point in the sky, which usually occurs on December 21 to 22 each year. (source: Wikipedia)

“December 21 is the winter solstice, and in 2012 the Sun on the solstice will be almost perfectly aligned with the plane of the galaxy (the Milky Way galaxy). What is astonishing is how precisely the Mayan calendar was able to pinpoint this alignment of the planets.”  (Source: 2012 Planetary Alignment)

“The equator of the Milky Way galaxy (Galactic Equator) and the path of the Sun (the Ecliptic) will cross each other at exactly 11:11 am GMT on December 21, 2012. What does this mean exactly? Or, even better, what is the probability of this occurring?

Every year on the winter solstice, our Sun has a Declination of -23.5 degrees, and a Right Ascension of 18 hours. But what makes the alignment of 2012 special is how this alignment occurs relative to very distant stars. On December 21, 2012, the alignment will be right along the plane of the entire galaxy. This precession of the equinoxes goes in a complete circle and happens only once every 26,000 years. In other words, the winter solstice moves 360 degrees every 26,000 years, or 0.01 degrees each year.

A significant detail that promoters of the 2012 doomsday fail to point out, however, is that the plane of the galaxy is not the width of a needle. The plane of the galaxy is quite wide – in fact, it takes the winter solstice between 700 hundred and 1,400 years to cross the plane of the galaxy! So 2012 is just one year amidst a span of 700 years.”  (source:  2012 Planetary Alignment)

All we need to do is step outside, look up to the heavens, notice the shining stars, the sun, the moon, and the planets, the various constellations and galaxies, and marvel at the wonders of our Creator, the Holy One, who created the Heavens and the Earth who sprinkled “signs,” at His command, divine moments as they function, to remind us that it’s He who is in control. He is the Master Designer–He doesn’t waste anything.  Dark matter, anti matter–does it all matter?  Yes!

God is such a Creator, the Artist of all artists; no one can overtake Him.  He leads, He guides, He provides, He protects, He is …, He is …, He is the great “I AM!”

But the best part of all His creation is You.  He wants to have you as part of His Kingdom in Heaven.  He doesn’t need you, He WANTS You.  He created you, a special part of Him, to share His marvelous works, to enjoy life eternally.  That’s why He sent Jesus Christ, who took your sins to the Cross, to redeem you back to Him.  You get to choose.  Choose to be with Him.

Without Jesus Christ, there wouldn’t be any Christmas, celebrating His birth, much less a solstice with the planets dancing across the skies most likely playing to the tunes of God.

It wouldn’t matter, would it? Without Jesus Christ, the world would be empty and the created universe probably would just sit there void, without form, without any light to sparkle the dark skies.

You and I need Him.  He is Life.  Pray to Him.  Ask Him into your life.

Merry Christmas Winter Solstice!

Blessings,

  1. What a wonderful article, the miracles of God tremendous. I guess the Mayans were pretty smart, but it is God’s power that will hold it all in place until He is ready for the end times. Thanks, Mary.

  2. Hi Denny! Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment. Your kind encouragement means alot to me and I’m glad you liked the article.
