For Freedom In Liberty You Fought

USMC

USMC

In Memory of my brother Joe Medina, who fought as a US Marine

In the rice patty battlefields of Vietnam and

Robert Pacheco Jr. who also actively served as a US Marine,

And for all those who live to tell the tale of Liberty In Freedom.

I salute you!

For Freedom in Liberty You Fought

For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; (Gal 5:13)

You bled and died in Jesus Christ so that we may be free;

Free to live and worship in the USA.

For Freedom in Liberty You Fought.

In the blistering jungles of Vietnam you fought ever so bravely.

Through the briars, brambles and the thickets you went forth steadily

Sweat pelting down against your brow, tears of salt misting your eyes.

You stalked the unseen enemy hiding in the thick sizzling forest.

For Freedom in Liberty You Fought.

Though the bombs fell from the dark skies late at night

As you hunkered in those searing bunkers a fright,

You prayed you would live to fight another day.

For Freedom in Liberty You Fought.

The piercing sounds of well-worn helicopters dove in and out

The rice patty battlefields in Vietnam as they lifted

The gravely wounded soldier into safety’s waiting arms.

Those screeching blades broke into your senses of an unimaginable sight

That only hell could ascribe, that demilitarized zone.

For Freedom in Liberty You Fought.

Later, oh much later you would join your surviving comrades

Muttering “mission accomplished!” as you greeted one another sheepishly

In those musty stifling tents as you laid to rest to fight another day.

For Freedom in Liberty You Fought.

Once a Marine, Always a Marine

For Freedom in Liberty You Fought.

  1. I have some friends who are marines and truly “once a marine… always a marine”, and what a wonderful honor your poetry does for them. God bless our military then and now and God bless you!
